HP LaserJet Pro M404dn - Advanced configuration with the HP Utility for macOS

The HP Utility is a printer management software that is used to check printer status or to view or change printer settings from a Mac computer.

The HP Utility is installed on your Mac computer when you install HP Easy Start from support.hp.com/drivers. Use HP Utility when the printer is connected with a USB cable or connected to a network.

NOTE:

To install HP Easy Start, go to support.hp.com/drivers, click Printer, enter your printer name in the search field, and then click your printer name when it displays in the autocomplete results. The "Software and drivers" page displays.

On the "Software and drivers" page, click Installation Software, and then click Download next to HP Easy Start. Follow the onscreen prompts to download and install the software.

Open the HP Utility

Follow these steps to open the HP Utility.

  1. On a Mac computer, click the Finder icon, and then click the Applications folder.

  2. Select the HP folder, and then double-click HP Utility.

HP Utility toolbar

The HP Utility toolbar allows you to access information about your printer, settings, HP Support, supplies, registration, recycling, and product improvement.

HP UTILITY TOOLBAR

Following are the menu options available in the HP Utility toolbar:

  • Devices: Displays a list of available printers and printer status.

  • All Settings: Provides information about a selected printer.

    To view more information about the printer settings, see the Printer information and settings section below.

  • HP Support: Provides access to the HP Support website for online troubleshooting and support information.

    To access your printer's HP Support website, click Continue.

  • Supplies: Provides access to the HP SureSupply website where you can shop for HP printer supplies online.

  • Registration: Provides access to the HP registration website to register your printer and submit the information online.

    To access the HP registration website, click Continue .

  • Recycling: Provides access to the HP Planet Partners Product Return & Recycling website where you can view convenient ways to recycle your HP products.

    To access the HP Planet Partners Product Return & Recycling website, click Continue.

To participate in an anonymous research program without providing any personal information, click Product Improvement. If this button is not available on the toolbar, click the right arrow button >> to view the HP Product Improvement Study research program.

Printer information and settings

Learn about the printer settings that are available in the HP Utility.

To view information and modify settings for a printer using the HP Utility toolbar, click Devices, select a printer, and then click All Settings.

The following table lists the printer settings that are available in the HP Utility.

NOTE:

The features and settings might vary depending on the printer model and macOS version.

SETTINGS FOR A PRINTER IN HP UTILITY

Item

Description

Supplies Status

View the estimated toner levels for each cartridge.

Device Information

View information about the selected printer, including the printer Service ID (if assigned), firmware (FW) version, serial number, and IP address.

You can also print a Configuration Page from this screen.

File Upload

Transfer files from the computer to the printer. The following file types are supported:

  • HP LaserJet printer command language (.PRN)

  • Portable document format (.PDF)

  • Postscript (.PS)

  • Text (.TXT)

HP Connected

Access the HP Connected (HP Smart) website.

Test

Test the printer connection and print quality by printing a test page.

Message Center

Displays error events that have occurred with the printer.

NOTE:

This information will display in the Message Center when Display HP Alerts is enabled.

Device Administration

Enable or disable the features on the printer.

Auto-off

Configure the printer to turn off or go into Sleep Mode after a set amount of time.

Network Settings

(Network-connected printers only)

Configure or change the following network settings:

  • IPv4

  • IPv6

  • Bonjour Settings

  • Other Settings

A user name and password might be required to access and change these settings.

Proxy Server Settings

Configure a proxy server for the printer.

Job Storage Settings

Manage the print jobs that are stored on the printer hard disk.

Supplies Management

Configure how the printer should behave when supplies are nearing the end of their estimated life.

Trays Configuration

Modify the paper size and type for each tray installed on the printer.

Additional Settings

Opens the HP Embedded Web Server (EWS) for the printer.

NOTE:

USB connections are not supported.

Basic Fax Settings (MFP fax models only)

Configure the settings for the printer to send and receive faxes.

Junk Fax Blocking (MFP fax models only)

Block incoming faxes to the printer from a list of selected caller ID numbers.

Fax Forwarding (MFP fax models only)

Configure the printer to send incoming faxes to a different fax number.

Fax Logs (MFP fax models only)

Block or unblock fax numbers.

Scan to E-mail (MFP models only)

Opens the HP Embedded Web Server page for configuring settings for scanning to email.

NOTE:

USB connections are not supported.

Scan to Network (MFP models only)

Opens the HP Embedded Web Server page for configuring settings for scanning to a network folder.

NOTE:

USB connections are not supported.
