HP UPD - HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) supported printers

Learn which printers can use the Universal Print Driver (UPD) for Windows.

This document lists the HP printers supported by the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD). The information is updated with each Universal Print Driver release and was last verified July 20, 2023.

For the latest release information, go to the Release Notes.

For supported Windows operating system information for clients and servers, refer to system requirements listed in the HP UPD .

UPD Page Description Languages

The Universal Print Driver has three Page Description Language options including PCL6, PCL5, and PostScript-emulation (PS).

NOTE:

HP UPD 6.1.0 is the last release of UPD to include PCL5.

NOTE:

The HP UPD does not support installations or printing with Wi-Fi Direct or Wireless Direct connections.

1 Where indicated by footnote 2, connect the printer to the computer using a supported connection type in order to install the driver. Some printers do not support network or wireless installs. For these printers, use a USB connection. Some printers or tablets do not support USB installs. For these devices, use a wireless connection. Select printers require the purchase of a wireless accessory to enable a wireless install.

2 Where indicated by footnote 3, this printer must first obtain the .msi file from support.hp.com, HP LaserJet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8/Server 2012, in order to successfully install using a USB connection. After downloading and installing the .msi, then install the HP UPD by double-clicking the install.exe, select the USB Mode - Plug and Play option, and then connect the USB cable when prompted by the installer.

3 Where indicated by footnote 4, HP LaserJet All-in-One printers do NOT support scanning via a network, do NOT support the Scan to PDF feature, and do not support utilities such as HP Solution Center in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and newer.
